the mystery of the leaky kitty fountain

i am home sick again today.  i generally feel like poop.  sneezy and coughing.  pretty much awesome.

so i figured i would share a story with you...

i have three cats... Riley, Tess and Olivia.  they free feed, meaning that there is no meal time, that they always have food available.  in my loving, kitty-mommy way, i chose to get them a pretty good cat fountain.  it has a reservoir and filter... pretty much is nicer than any thing i drink water out of.

a week or so ago, i found that the placemat that sits underneath the fountain drenched.  i ended up throwing it away.  i took apart the fountain and cleaned it, thinking that was the problem.  i refilled it and the reservoir, and set it back up.

same thing happened.

so i moved it to the counter, intendint to figure out the problem.  i thought i found a leak in the reservoir container, so i didn't set that part back up.

with a towel under it, i set the thing running again.  and the towel got soaked again.

i had almost resigned myself to buying another fountain, just giving up and getting ready to shell out the $60ish for it.

then i was sitting on the couch, and i heard Olivia at the fountain.  i say heard, cuz she's always been a bit of a weirdo with water.  she usually sticks her head in the stream as she drinks.  odd really.

so, i hear the stream of water being interrupted, and i look over the couch cushion into the kitchen, and olivia is at the fountain.  better yet, IN the fountain.  she had both front feet in the water, and her head in the stream.  then, she started to "dig" the water, like a dog does dirt.

needless to say, the fountain doesn't leak.

my cat's just special.

oh, and as an added funny, when she jumped off the counter and tried to run away with wet feet, she definitely wiped out.

and i laughed at her.

hee! my kitty likes to paddle in water too (stoopid kitteh). I like the sound of a kitty fountain - does it take up loads of space? Love your kitteh names btw :)

this is the fountain. it's not too too big. and you have to buy the reservoir on the back seperately, but i think it's worth it.

and thanks! i love their names too. i wanted to give them people names. Riley is Riley Ruth, Tess is just Tess (like Cher or Madonna), and Olivia is Olivia Aoife (pronounced eefa). they're my babies!

thanks for the link - it looks brilliant. I think I'll get one for my water-crazy Sushi :)

Bwahahaha! Reminds me of a story I heard about someones printer and they thought the roller was jamming and tearing the paper. It was in another room from the computer. Turned out their cat thought the paper coming out was a toy and was ripping it up.

One of my cats ADORED water. He even sliced through my waterbed mattress to get to the water. One day, I came home from work to find the kitchen water running. Kang had figured out how to turn on the water. The knobs were the flat paddle kind, so he'd just push with his foot. Never did turn it back off again [g]

cats are so clever! i had one who could open the cellar door, where we put them for the night. we ended up needing to put a lock on the door so they would stay down there. so clever!

he sliced your waterbed! o noes! did he make a HUGE mess?

Oh yeah, it was a huge mess. Thankfully, the water was all caught in the rubber thing in the frame like it was supposed to. But I had to get a new bed. He did love his water :)

Oh noes, bad sickness go aways!

LOL - your cat is cool. My cats are both chicken of water, though they have the habbit of every now and again following you into the shower and then getting pissed off when they get wet, dummies.

Tess has done that in the shower. one time in my old apartment, i was washing my hair so my eyes were shut. and something furry ran by my leg. i opened one eye, and saw an orane tail darting out of the shower curtain.

and she and olivia both like to jump in the shower after i'm done. odd little critters.

Yeah, they like to lick the water drops? that's what mine does when I get out, lol.

TOO funny! This guy is our cat Louis Prima (if you don't know who that is, he was the voice of King Louie in Disney's The Jungle Book and he was just as crazy as King Louie, too). And our Louis has taken after his namesake.

If we put water in a dish for him, by the time the bowl is on the floor for him, it's too stale, apparently. He just turns up his nose and walks away. So now we refer to the bathtub as Louis's big white water dish. He gets under the faucet and meows and rubs it with his nose until we come along and turn the water on for him at just a trickle. Then he either drinks it like drinking out of a (human's) water fountain or else he sticks in his paw and licks the water off of it.

I just LOVE hearing cat stories -- they're all such individuals!

mine have the fountain, and they still fight over who gets a drink from the faucet. i swear... they're odd.

i have a bunch of cat stories. some of them are posted here, using the "critters" tag. but that tag also encompasses my gecko, turtle and fish stories as well. and sometimes i just mention something in there about one of the critters.

feel free to browse around. :)

OMG! All the kitty icons above and I don't have one! Oh, well. I'm special :)

Our other dog sort of does something sort of the same. He's too big to get into his bucket of water but he sticks one leg in and starts digging away at it. Then there's water everywhere.

Pets do strange things - that's why they're awesome!

you are special! :)

this is a new thing with the water fountain. it makes me a bit nuts... i hope it's just a phase. i am going through towels like kleenex!

and i agree... the strange things they do absolutely make them awesome. :)

When the piper plays up, then it dances gaily,

And thumps with a whack to leather a foe.
